Both teams arrived at Bulahdelah school library prepared and enthusiastic to compete in the 2016 Lower North Coast Primary Debating Competition. Amongst the audience were future, prospective debaters from Years 4 and 5 as well as some experienced Year 7 debaters.
Bulahdelah had drawn the affirmative position.
This was a third round debate and the team was excited to have the opportunity to be part of the competition once again.
Timekeeper, Raylee Kierans, was particularly excited to have the opportunity to juggle the busy role of introducing speakers, timekeeping and getting to ring the time bells (that she’s been waiting to do all year!).
Bulahdelah rotated the order of speakers each debate and for this debate first speaker was Annee-Rose Perry. Bridie O’Connell took up the second speaker role with Olivia Smith our third speaker. Overall note-taker role was conducted by Amber Cunningham.
Bulahdelah’s primary debating team meets weekly on Thursday afternoons to practice, prepare and learn new debating skills. For this topic (‘that all children should play a sport’), there was a large amount of material available to draw on and the debating team had spent their meeting times busily preparing. Team members also worked in their own time preparing notes and practising their arguments.
During the debate, Bungwahl delivered a solid line of arguments showing a well-prepared team effort.
With Raylee doing a remindful job with ringing bells the time sped quickly passed before the adjudicator, Mrs Caro, delivered feedback and the overall announcement that Bulahdelah had won the debate. Both teams enjoyed some light refreshments and the chance to chat together after the debate.
Bulahdelah primary debating team now awaits the next schedule of debates working towards the finals.
