But, retirement was an unknown for 97-year-old Isabel McBride until this week when when she reluctantly stepped aside from her volunteer position with the Anglican op shop in Forster.
Isabel has been a constant worker at the popular outlet since it opened its doors 22 years ago.
Before joining the op shop two decades ago, Isabel was president of the Anglican guild selling knick knacks and crafts for the church.
“Moving to the op shop was part and parcel of life, and I enjoyed the company,” Isabel said.
Now it's time for me to step aside for younger people, Isabel said.
She was farewelled by work-mates and Forster Tuncurry Anglican Parish minister, Rev Mark Harris who paid tribute to Isabel for her dedicated years of selfless service.
“It is sad for us to lose her but she has decided to hand on the role to someone younger,” he said.
Her work-mates said they loved Isabel's nature, her willingness to get in there, and her reliability.
Retirement from the op shop does not mean stepping aside from her church, which plays an important place in Isabel's life.
“I have faith; you have to have something and I have always had faith.” she said.
The youngest of 10 children Isabel was born in Tinonee and moved to Black Head where her dad owned and operated a dairy farm.
School buses weren't available during those early days, so Isabel, her siblings and friends went to Failford school via a horse and cart.
She completed her secondary school education in Taree at St Joseph's Convent and later worked as a cook for the local member's wife.
Married to husband Abe until he died in his 50s, she has three children, eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and her first great great granchild is due in December.
Tuncurry was home for 37 years before moving to Forster 42-years ago.
“I am very grateful to have seen my children and grand children grown up, and to have had such a good family.
She believes her regular cup of coffee and living life in moderation could be the secret of her longevity.
And, what does Isabel plan to do in retirement?
“I am going to clean out my cupboards," she said.
