Pressure from the fishing industry has led to changes in fisheries reforms but there are calls for the plans to be suspended until more is known.
NSW Minister for Primary Industries Niall Blair has extended the Interim Total Commercial Access Levels until 2024 and brought forward the use of unendorsed crew and extra traps if extra shares are held. A $16 million fund will support fishers, including fishing buyouts of $20,000 and subsidies to fishers increasing their current shareholding or selling shares.
But shadow minister Mick Veitch said that NSW fishers need more information. He said they are concerned that fishers are being forced to invest in more industry shares without any information regarding the return to investment and the cost to business, and could go wrong, becoming a blow to regional communities.
