On Thursday May 12 it was announced that Great Lakes, Greater Taree and Gloucester councils would be merged into the one Mid-Coast Council.
Mr Handford, who was the general manager of Great Lakes Council, was appointed interim general manager of Mid Coast Council while former Nationals Member of Myall Lakes John Turner was appointed administrator.
Speaking to the media today he said: "We've got to take up the challenge that's been given to us and it's not just been given to the Great Lakes, Great Lakes doesn't exist any more - we're Mid Coast. So we're now working for every resident and rate payer of Mid Coast Council."
The deputy general managers of the new council are Ron Posselt (Taree) and Danny Green (Gloucester).
This weekend Mr Handford and Mr Turner will travel to Sydney to attend meetings with the GMs and administrators of the other 18 newly merged councils from across the State.
