Peter was a trend setter in Australian motor sport, best remembered as a driver of smaller capacity cars.
He raced from 1962 until 1987.
He finished third in the 1980 Australian Touring Car Championship in a four cylinder Toyota .
Peter was an accomplished driver and in 1979 was approached by ATN-7 to carry a camera in a race car for the very first time anywhere in the world.
The race was to be the Hardie Ferado 1000 at one of the toughest circuits in the world - Mount Panorama.
In an interview Peter did with me a few years ago he told me the huge camera mounted behind the driver weighed some 30kgs.
Not good for the car’s power to weight ratio.
Peter was told by the director not to go under trees as the helicopter would lose the signal.
There go the race lines.
Peter’s in-car commentary during the race has become legendary.
In the same race Peter’s pit crew couldn’t access the boot to fuel the car, so out came an axe.
Memories, memories.
In his 25 year career Peter drove everything from touring cars to open wheelers. His outgoing happy nature made him popular with fellow competitors and spectators alike.
Peter’s partner and stalwart supporter for the last 37 years has been wife Cheryl.
Australian motorsport has lost a man whose like will not pass our way again.
To Cheryl and the entire Williamson family our deepest condolences. - Peter, RIP
Peter's funeral will be held from 1.30pm this Friday (April 29) at St Alban's Anglican Church, Forster.
