FBI president Darren McDonagh remembers Flew as someone with a colourful personality and who was considered the ultimate nice guy.
Flew passed away in March last year after a battle with cancer.
“He was highly respected in the surfing community,” McDonagh said.
“The main reason we want to do the comp is out of respect for Toby.”
The competition is a tag team format. There are 16 teams of five, with contestants only allowed to surf retro single and with twin fins.
“Toby was a massive mal and retro surfboard enthusiast,” McDonagh said.
“We thought it was natural to do the retro comp.”
Contestants on the day will range from all ages, including some former professionals.
While the focus of the event is on camaraderie, McDonagh expects some competitiveness to come out once the contest singlets are pulled on.
After the competition there will be a presentation night at Club Forster which will include entertainment, auctions and a raffle.
All the money raised will go to the oncology unit of the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital where Flew was treated.
The Live Like Toby: Retro Tag Team Comp is on Sunday, December 13 at 7am at North One Mile Beach, depending on conditions.
