THE fixed charge for trailers and cars carrying waste into local tips will be scrapped, with a new fee system adopted as part of the Great Lakes Council budget adopted recently.

The Environmental Protection Authority has ruled that, from February 1 next year, all vehicles must be weighed in and out of tips, including those at Tuncurry and Minimbah. Previously, only trucks were weighed, with utes, cars and trailer loads paying a fixed amount.
Great Lakes Council manager of waste, health and regulatory services and natural systems John Cavanagh said the new system would be much fairer for users.
“Instead of a fixed $15 charge for a trailer-load, you will only be charged for what you drop off,” he said.
“It is likely to be slower, as you will have to weigh in at the start and then weigh out at the end, but you will only pay based on the amount of material you drop off.”
New weigh bridges are currently planned for Tuncurry and Minimbah, with the new fees structure expected to be implemented on February 1 next year, or from the time the weigh bridges are in place.
