The accident occurred after the woman took the L bend corner on Little St, with the car hitting a roadside post as it headed north.
Police blocked off the road from both ends as NSW Fire and Rescue sought to remove the entrapped woman from her blue car which had flipped onto its side.
The lifesaving tool ‘jaws of life’ was used to cut through the roof to gain access to the driver, who despite her ordeal was talking and not seriously injured.
Shane Robertson was three cars behind the accident, approaching from the opposite direction. He has training in first aid and was first on the scene to see how he could help the woman trapped inside.
“She was talking, and told me she was a ‘tough old bird’,” a relieved Mr Robertson said.
Telling Mr Robertson she was 72-years-old, she went on to say ‘it had been a good car’ and she had had it for eight years.
Police officers on the scene expressed admiration at her resilience.
