The fire brigade enacted an exclusion zone and police helped to keep traffic away from the scene between the Seal Rocks turnoff and the Bungwahl school.
Rebecca Gray lives on Seal Rocks road just past the small Bungwahl Primary School. She says it must have happened between 2.30 and 3pm and thankfully all the children had left for the day.
"They finish up early around 2pm and all the kids had gone home by then."
She didn't see the accident but heard the smash.
"It sounded like a truck had lost its load - you could hear metal smashing on bitumen.
"After a little while we heard police cars and they turned around at our driveway and said they were setting up an exclusion zone. We were planning to go into Forster but we can just cancel that."
An ambulance was also called for the driver of the truck.
Cars were unable to get through on either side of the accident for a number of hours but by about 5.30 the traffic was moving again.
