The 12 books follow the experiences of 13-year-old Amber who survives in the urban jungle of Sydney by hunting her own food with her own homemade weapons.
She is mentored by a bush dwelling Aboriginal boy called Billy, also 13, who teaches her the ins and outs of the hunting craft.
“It’s about black and white living together – they are both 13 but they are both polar opposites – one is from the bush and the other is from the city but they both find themselves living on the streets in Sydney,” Gary explains.
“I wrote this with the Simpsons in mind – it’s for children and adults. I think kids can do amazing things if given the chance. Kids do get underestimated. They’re more capable and intelligent than people realise.”
Gary has released eight of the books after writing drafts of the entire series. Now it is just a matter of him going over the remaining drafts and making minor adjustments before releasing them. He hopes to release the ninth book this year and the remaining books in next two years.
Since their release, schools all over Australia have adapted Gary’s books into their curriculum.
“I just started emailing schools about the books and it went from there,” Gary explains.
“I’m really excited about that aspect of it all. Schools all over the country have been ordering full sets and use the books to teach kids about Aboriginal customs and culture.
“I’m not sure why some are interested and some aren’t. I haven’t had any interest from schools locally as yet.
“I’ve also had interest from outback communities and libraries so it’s been great.”
In recent years, Gary has also written two marketing books for new authors looking to break into the writing world - Stampede and Email Capture for Authors: The Mechanics of Setting up the System.
His main focus at the moment is writing screen plays so Urban Hunters can be adapted into a TV show or movie.
“I just absolutely love it. It’s been great finding out about the adventures of these two characters. It’s just been lots of fun to write about,” Gary said.
“It’s too early on in the screen writing process to know what it will be best for yet but it will definitely become either one. I just have to see how it pans out.
“Movies or TV is the pinnacle of where I’m trying to get to at the moment so there are some exciting times head.”
