The project is the largest to take place in the area in recent times and involves crews replacing a regulating transformer, installing new cable and three new gas switches.
Regional manager for the North Coast Brendon Neyland said the works will give Essential Energy crews the ability to section off powerlines when performing future upgrades or maintenance.
“We are committed to ensuring the network is meeting the needs of all our customers and this upgrade is one example of how we are working to achieve this,” Mr Neyland said.
“Crews replaced a regulating transformer at the corner of Firefly and Avalon Roads in February which will assist with keeping the voltage levels consistent along the line for customers – providing a more reliable supply.”
The project is scheduled to be completed on April 22 when an underground high voltage cable is installed to connect the regulating transformer to the overhead network and the new switches are put in place.
“The new switches will not only provide the ability to minimise the number of customers affected by future planned or fault and emergency work but will also decrease outages due to being enclosed in a protective casing, shielding them from nesting birds and other wildlife interference,” Mr Neyland said.
Residents in the area will experience an interruption to their power in April as a result of the works.
Mr Neyland said dates and times will be provided via mail to affected customers. He thanked customers for their patience while the works are carried out.
