Held at the Tuncurry Racecourse Lake, Saturday’s (March 14) scratch racing took place in difficult conditions with a light and fluky wind in the morning which became steadier from the south after lunch.
Due to the number of entries, two fleets were sailed with each skipper sailing eight races. At the end of the day the winner, on 13 points, was Phil Page from Northern Mariners from local skipper Craig Sargeant on 19. Frank Russell from Northern Mariners finished a close third on 20 points.
On Sunday (March 15), handicap racing was held in conjunction with a round of the NSW Interclub Championship.
Again, conditions made it difficult for course setting with a south to south-east wind which became steadier in the afternoon but with the threat of rain. Craig Sargeant and Garry Bromley from Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club mastered the conditions best with Craig showing greater consistency to win with 58 points from Garry on 66.
Frank Russell narrowly finished in third place on 81 points ahead of Ralph Hyman from Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club on 82.
The Interclub team event saw a tie for first place between the Forster-Tuncurry team of Craig Sargeant, Alan Griffiths and Phil Lawson and Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club on 20 points. Third place went to the Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club team who were only four points behind.
In conjunction with the weekend’s racing the Doug Billing Memorial Trophy was awarded to the winner of Sunday’s handicap racing, Craig Sargeant.
The trophy is in honour of the late Doug Billing - a long time Forster Tuncurry Radio Yacht Club member and one of the true legends of the sport of model yacht racing.
The Racecourse Lake is an ideal venue for model yacht racing. From Chapmans Road take the turnoff to the golf driving range, cross the race tracks and turn left, keeping inside the dirt training track (please do not drive on the track).
The club sails 10-rater class yachts at the lake on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of each month from 11am.
Visitors and new members are always welcome to come along and try this fascinating sport with boats and advice readily available. For further information phone Roger Smith on 6555 6450.
