THE 57th Australian Police Bowling Championships concluded last week with NSW remaining undefeated to claim an easy victory in the annual Sides Championship.
The week-long tournament was hosted by the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club and involved 180 serving and retired police officers from around Australia. The event officially began on Wednesday March 11 with a march before an opening bowl by NSW police deputy commissioner Jeff Loy. A welcome address was then made by Great Lakes mayor Jan McWilliams. The event wrapped up last Thursday (March 19). The week proved to be a successful one for NSW with Craig Thompson showing class in the Singles Championships final with a determined victory over fellow state representative Dean Smith.
NSW also won the Sides Championship, the Consistency Trophy and the Pairs and Triples Championship.
In the Associate Fours Championships, Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club was asked to field a team to represent Hong Kong. In a story book finish, the team, consisting of Ted Carruthers, John Meredith, Steve Holohan and Barry Dean claimed victory to receive the title of Australian Associate Champions.
Australia also reclaimed the Cathay Pacific Trophy after defeating Hong Kong by a close margin on Saturday March 14.
A presentation night to congratulate all of the winning bowlers was held at Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club on the final day of competition. Club manager Terry Green thanked all of the volunteers for contributing to a smooth and successful championship.
