Up to 300 swimmers are expected at Elizabeth Beach in Pacific Palms on April 5, in an event that has become an Easter Sunday tradition for many, with people travelling from Sydney and beyond to compete.
“This year we have two ocean swims on offer,” Pacific Palms Surf Club president Kel McCredie said.
“The Mini Rock at 11am is 600 metres and would be ideal for the younger or not so confident swimmers. At midday the first wave of 1.5km swimmers will hit the water, with the second wave heading off shortly after.
“Surf conditions are usually calm at this time of year, but we do have a back up venue in Wallis Lake in the event of dangerous surf.”
Long term sponsor Pacific Palms Real Estate has come on board yet again to put up the prizes for the event – cash prizes for the overall first three male and female placegetters and medals for the first three in all age categories of the 1.5km swim, plus medals for the first three males and females over the line in the 600m swim.
All competitors will wear an electronic timing band so that results will be available soon after the race and water safety will be provided by Pacific Palms Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) lifesavers.
Entry is open to all competent swimmers from age 10 upwards and will set you back $10 for the 600m swim and $30 for the 1.5km swim (or $35 for both swims) if you enter by 5pm on Easter Saturday - this includes race entry, free swim cap and also a barbecue sandwich after the event.
For those who would rather check out the surf on the day first, late entries on Easter Sunday will be taken up until 10am and will cost $15 for the 600m, $40 for the 1.5km and $45 for both.
Entries can be made online at www.oceanswims.com
Entries will also be taken on Easter Saturday at the Blueys Shops, Boomerang Drive, Pacific Palms, from 8.30am-1pm, and at the Pacific Palms SLSC clubhouse, Lakeside Crescent, Pacific Palms, from 1.30-5pm.
Last chance for late entries is on the morning of the race from 8.30am-10am.
Full details are on the club’s website, www.pacificpalmssurfclub.com, and timed certificates will be available for downloading after the event.
“Competitors who have pre-entered still need to pick up their cap and timing band prior to the compulsory race safety briefing at 10.40am in the clubhouse,” Kel said.
“Don’t be late as the first gun will go off at 11am sharp.”
