Teams travelled from as far north as Coffs Harbour, south to Newcastle and inland from Dubbo to compete on the Manning River on Saturday January 24 and Sunday January 25.
Local paddlers had enough male numbers this year to enter a men’s team for the first time. The team competed in a 2km turn race as well as three 200m races in the men’s women’s and mixed categories. The team placed fourth in each event overall.
Pearl Dragons team member Wendy Orman said the Pearls tried their best on both days but were up against some tough NSW teams including Kempsey who took out the regatta.
“It was really tough. Kempsey always brings it home – they’re so strong,” she said.
“We tried our hardest but unfortunately didn’t get up there.”
The Pearl Dragons are now in training for the Chinese New Year Regatta in Sydney on February 28 which will see members enter in the opens, women’s and mixed team events.
