As December 25 approached in 1986, father Brady noticed that a large amount of people in the community would be spending the day alone. 

In an effort to help them feel less isolated, father Brady decided to put on a free community lunch at the Forster Tuncurry Parish Hall. Close to 30 years later and the tradition is still going strong. 

Pastoral associate Greg Byrne said Christmas can often be a sad time for elderly people who feel detached as they are separated from their children and grandchildren by large distances. He said sharing the day with other singles or families can help to bring a bit of joy to their life. 

This year, the hall will be opened from 11.30am and lunch will be served at 1pm. A group of youths will be singing Christmas carols as entertainment for those in attendance. Santa will also make a special appearance at lunchtime.
