Fifty students from Great Lakes College, Forster and Tuncurry Campus’, St Clares High School and Manning Valley Anglican School (MVAC) participated in this year’s competition, competing on the beach and water across seven events.
Thanks to having the majority of participants, Great Lakes campus’ took the lead in points with 326, with St Clares following closely behind with 241 points and MVAC coming in at 20 points thanks to the heroic effort of MVAC’s sole participant, Cape Hawke SLSC member and year 8 student Layne Grant.
The 13-year-old gave the three events her all, coming away victorious in all of them.
Unfortunately, not taking part in the flags event meant she was unable to secure her place as the Under 13s Girls Champion which was awarded to St Clares student Karla Berg who participated with distinction in each race.
Jack Wood from St Clares was the Under 13 Boys champion. Ty Judson from Great Lakes College won the Under 15 Boys, and Chelsea Green from St Clares won the Under 15 Girls. Open Boy and Girl Champions (over 15) were won by Jordan Brown and Jesse Wilkes respectively, both from St Clares.
“The best thing about the day was that the kids had so much fun” said Kellie Connolly, the carnival’s organiser and referee.
“We had kids who have nothing to do with surf life saving getting onto the beach and having a go. All the schools supported each other and mixed in one big group, yelling out encouragement to those racing.”
