The team, which consisted of students in years 9, 10 and 11 from all three campuses, paddled strongly all day to defeat four naval cadet teams from all over NSW as well as a representative North Coast team who was given a 10 second handicap.
Coach Wendy Orman said she was exceptionally proud of her team considering they had only paddled together for a short period of time.
“These students had only paddled together for sport in the afternoons finding only about 45 minutes to train on the water after getting the boat to the water and then having to catch buses back to each campus,” she said.
“They were so keen and worked together like seasoned dragon boat paddlers.
“Hopefully some of the paddlers will continue the sport and join up with the Manning River Dragon Boat Club.”
The Manning Club has a number of teenage paddlers who are in the NSW under 18’s team and one member who is in the under 18’s Aurora’s national team. The club conducts a junior paddle on Fridays at 4.30pm on the Manning River.
