The Forster Public School student won the year 5 division and received a shield in recognition of his achievement.
Tuncurry Public School student Joel Elliot claimed second place in the Year 6 division. Both students sat the 35-question exam paper along with 16,000 students from schools across the Hunter, Central Coast, Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, New England and Central West.
Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett congratulated the students on their achievement.
“Both Charlie and Joel have done a tremendous job topping the Northern Region and with Charlie taking out the shield for his school,” Mr Millett said.
The competition began in 1981 and challenges students to complete the exam without using calculators, rulers or geometrical instruments. It is divided into the Hunter and Northern regions with students participating from the Central West for the first time this year.
