Dredging the channel became necessary on a regular basis with the cross-channel ferry service between Forster and Tuncurry up until 1959 when the bridge opened.
This group appear to be on their way to the to the Taree races according to the handwritten inscription on the reverse of the photo which reads: ‘Waiting for the punt to go across for the coach to Taree for Melbourne Cup Day’.
There are no names documented with the image so if you recognise any of the faces museum volunteers would love to hear from you. Visit the clickHistory project online at: www.clickhistorygreatlakes.wordpress.com or contact the Great Lakes Museum on 6554 6275 (Tuesday to Thurs from10am to 2pm).
