The walk will take place in Tuncurry, this Saturday evening (November 1) at 7pm.
The Nannas Lantern Walk is in solidarity with Groundswell Gloucester and the Northern Rivers Gasfield Free March, in calling on the government to cancel all gas leases in the northern rivers and declare them gasfield free.
The Tuncurry walk follows a successful nannas event where over 200 people walked down Fairbairns Lane, Gloucester, where the CSG operations are located. These walks have been well attended; they have been peacefully conducted and are growing in numbers with each event.
Clr Gill also joined the protest at the AGL general meeting in Sydney.
“I joined over 300 people from Gloucester, the Great Lakes and the Manning, who travelled to Sydney to peacefully protest and raise awareness with share holders about the risks of fracking to our farmlands, community, water catchment and climate. We have seen what has happened to the community, water catchment and farmlands of Tara Queensland and we do not want that happening here.”
She believes the risk to local water catchment is too great and until there is further information and evidence to demonstrate otherwise, the operation should cease immediately.
“My greatest concern, is that approvals were given, before any community engagement occurred or water studies have been completed, yet the state government, in light of no water data studies, has given approval to commence this highly questionable practice.”
The nannas family lantern walk will start at 7pm, at the Lone Pine Memorial Park Tuncurry, Point Rd and Coral Ave Tuncurry and will proceed to the Tuncurry baths and back.
“Bring lanterns, torches and banners. Come and meet families and community members from Gloucester who are living under the threat of being fracked and find out what they have to say and most importantly to your show support and put a light on this terrible situation.”
