Police say at about 8.20am, the man had stopped to get fuel from the store when he noticed smoke coming out of the bonnet of his car.
The man quickly moved his car further up the road away from the fuel tanks and walked away when in a matter of seconds, the car became engulfed in flames.
Police say the man escaped unharmed.
Bungwahl Rural Fire Service crews were called and extinguished the blaze. The white Hyundai hatchback was completely destroyed.
Police say the explosion is believed to have occurred due to an electrical fault.
Bungwahl resident Camille Rochester was at the store at the time and captured some incredible photos of the explosion.
“The car exploded out the front of the Bungwahl store. The young man got out okay and recovered some of his possessions,” she said.
Police could not say if the man was a local or a visitor to the area.
