Local men and women as well as those from the Manning promoted and raised awareness of the cancer as part of a Father’s Day family fun day.
The day involved a variety of stalls, live entertainment, prizes and speeches from special guests including medical specialists, urologist Dr Ben Kwok and oncologist Dr Ted Livshin and Prostate Cancer Ambassador Gary Angry Anderson.
Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead, who was behind the idea to hold the event, said a group of dedicated volunteers had willingly given up their time to make the day a success.
“Amongst so many contributors to the day, the eight local Men’s Sheds provided colour and talent in displaying the items they made and the auction of their projects raised about $1,600,” Mr Bromhead said.
“The day was about two important things: raising awareness with men about the need to have regular checks of their prostates and to raise funds for the two support groups in our region.”
More than $8,500 was raised on the day and will go to the Great Lakes and Manning Valley prostate cancer support groups to assist with their development activities.
“I want to thank the two doctors who gave their time and answered questions about the importance of men seeking regular prostate checks. I also want to thank the hundreds of people who came along and applauded the singers, bands, entertainers and gymnasts.”
