THE Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse at Seal Rocks was celebrated recently as part of International Lighthouse Day.
Locals and visitors gathered for a rare insight into the 15 metre tall tower as well as guided tours on Saturday and Sunday (August 16 and 17).
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Great Lakes Area Manager Stephen Smith said the day was an opportunity to celebrate the unique role that lighthouses and radio operations played in maritime history.
Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse was first opened in December 1875 and although officially de-manned in 1995, the lighthouse remains an important operational lighthouse to mariners today.
