Paddling in perfect conditions, the 500 metre races were held in the calm waters off the Ala Moana Beach, which is protected by an outer reef.
Team manager Gina Barber said that it was an absolutely fabulous experience with amazing hospitality and friendliness from the other teams, mainly Hawaiian.
A feature of the races unlike dragon boat events held here is that a ‘flag catcher’ lies at the front of the boat and the boat is deemed to have finished the race when the flag catcher successfully grabs the flag floating in their lane on the finish line.
Gina was most impressed by team member Gary’s great flag skills, Chris’ fantastic sweeping, Muriel’s consistent drumming and the Pearlers’ fine efforts in paddling.
The team came second in their heats of both the corporate and international categories and despite not making the finals, Gina said team members came away: “with the best ever regatta feeling”.
Lots of club shirt swapping happened and everyone came away smiling.
Many of the Pearlers are already talking about revisiting the regatta in the future. Well done to all our international representatives.
