The nucleus of the team have committed themselves to the season but at times have been let down.
The players nonetheless took to the field confident they could turn things around. Three minutes in, ‘Old Father Time’ Troy Hilder showed some deft touch to score an individual try and five minutes later his skill was on show again as he linked with his other mature team mate in Anthony McBride who scored with skipper Josh McCartney converting to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead.
The Breakers then hit straight back with the 2014 hole up the middle rearing its ugly head. The Hawks were then under extreme relentless pressure from Port. Ben Russell then scored for the Hawks but further tries to Port had them leading at half time 24-16.
Harrison Nowland and Hayden Bolt were injected into the game with head coach Mick Basham wanting these young talented players to have an opportunity at the top level.
Hayden then was rewarded with a try straight after half time. Again Port hit straight back to lead 30-20.
A try to Jake Collins and a second try to Bolt saw the scores level up at 30 all and the Hawks faithful started to believe but a silly penalty saw a long range goal give the Breakers a 32-30 lead with just minutes on the clock.
Two opportunities presented themselves for the Hawks to level up but they were desperate for the win rather than the draw but it wasn’t to be.
So again the under strength Hawks showed so much promise, so much effort but again no result. Frustrating is an understatement but to the loyal players who bust their guts each week, a win will come, because they so deserve it.
The club would like to thank the Port Breakers and the loyal Hawks supporters who stayed back and cleaned up the ground making the job of a few so much easier on Monday.
