The college is now known as WEA Coast after merging with WEA Hunter - a larger adult community education college based in Newcastle.
WEA Coast’s manager Roslyn Flood said with the federal government introducing the Smart and Skilled reforms to the vocational education and training system, the college’s future was uncertain.
“The college has been here for 30 years and the reforms were going to threaten our future so we sought avenues to continue to be a local education provider,” she said.
“Now we can continue to improve with WEA Hunter. They have been around for 100 years, are reputable and provide a similar service to the college.
“The change means that WEA can source more funding for us and we will be able to introduce more accredited courses."
The college was officially unveiled as WEA Coast on Wednesday as part of an open day which invited the general public to check out a series of free introductory courses which included a mosaic and floral art workshop, a Thai cooking class and an internet course for beginners.
Guests were then treated to a morning tea before the official ribbon cutting ceremony took place.
The college is located on the corner of Manning and Lake Streets Tuncurry.
