TODAY we continue our series on local collectors. Jim Harrison from Forster has been a collector for 43 years but the sad part about his story is that due to a stroke, he can’t remember the origins of the items in his collection. He is a member of the Manning and Great Lakes Gem and Mineral Club.

What do you collect? - I collect gemstones and minerals. I used to lecture at the Gemmological Association of Australia, Queensland division.
How did you first get into collecting? - I can’t remember. I had a stroke six years ago and most of my memory is gone. I look at the items in my collection and can’t remember how I got them.
What is your favourite item in your collection? - My wife, she is a real gem. She will do almost anything for anybody and doesn’t say a bad word about anybody.
What are the challenges of collecting? - The lack of space. I have had to sell a lot of my collection and have given items away to be raffled off to help raise funds for the club.
What do you like about being part of a collecting club? - The camaraderie and you can call somebody a bastard and they know you don’t mean it.
