After emailing Deaf Golf Australia asking about NSW competitions before Christmas, Greaves was pleasantly surprised by an invitation to play on the global stage.
“At the time my handicap was about 13 but I’ve worked really hard on it and I’m down to 10.6 now,” the 34-year-old said.
“They [Deaf Golf Australia] looked at my results and invited me to join about 17 other players from around the country.”
The 10th World Deaf Golf Championships will be played at Grand Traverse Resort in Michigan, America between July 15 and 18.
It is a great feat for the lady player of about five years. Greaves originally started playing golf as a hobby after her husband passed away suddenly in 2010.
Greaves did her schooling in Tuncurry and Forster and moved from the area for Queensland in 2002. She took up residence in Dunedoo near Dubbo in 2009.
Chantell was named Dunedoo’s Senior Sportsperson of the Year in 2013 and has won several ladies competitions across the western district. She has been the Dunedoo Golf Club ladies club champion for the last four years.
After going through hearing tests and proving her hearing impairment, the biggest hurdle to overcome now is raising money in order to travel to America.
Greaves says the support from the Dunedoo community so far has been amazing.
Greaves has been deaf since she was two years old. Her family is excited about her chance to represent Australia and are even hopeful of her coming back with more than just amazing memories.
