Aimed at inspiring change in indigenous youth as well as those at-risk, the clinic attracted 44 youths from the Great Lakes and the Manning Valley when it was held on Saturday May 3.
The Boogie Youth clinic was run by Forster Tuncurry Bodyboard Association (FTBA) in conjunction with the Bright Youth Foundation and Homebase Youth Services as well as several community partners who supported the event.
Participants were arranged into groups of eight where they took part in a yoga class conducted by Karen Farrell from Yoga Avenue before taking part in surf coaching lessons by Australian big wave surfer Brendan Newton, experienced bodyboard coach Heydon ‘Da Boogie Man’ Bunting, Jesse Blair, Matty McArthur, Ben Fletcher and Dyllan Kennedy.
A lesson on basic first aid and CPR was conducted by representatives from Marine Rescue Forster and Pacific Palms Surf Club.
The group were then treated to a visit from Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command Senior Constable David Russell who spoke to the group about anti bullying strategies and social media awareness.
Great Lakes Rotary members provided a barbecue and kept the youth hydrated throughout the day.
FTBA president Aaron Dodds said the clinic was a great success and a good way of eliminating anti-social behaviour among local youths.
Mr Dodds said the goal now is to acquire funding and support so more development and coaching clinics can continue in the near future.
