He flies out to London on Monday with two other successful young cricketers, Darren Bourke (Wauchope), who is going to Harrow St Mary’s in London and Jordan Lumby, a rising young lady from Gunnedah, who is playing for Penrith, Cumbria. They have been selected for the placements under a program run by the northern NSW Lord’s Taverners, to foster youngsters across a range of pursuits.
Warren is following in the footsteps of Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Lowe (formerly of Port Macquarie) and former Great Lakes player, Lenny Watt, who all spent a season at Richmond CC in London. He says he is indebted to both the Lord’s Taverners and Adam Gilchrist for this great opportunity. Gilchrist spent the 1989 season at the club and had a stellar year, signalling to all his ability, which led to him becoming one of Australia’s greatest cricketers.
In 2004 Gilchrist set up a scholarship to allow for promising young cricketers from country areas to spend a year at Richmond CC. Watts and Lowe were previous holders, along with Sam Whiteman from Bunbury, WA; and Bryan Warren is the 2014 recipient.
Warren, having deferred his university studies for the year, hopes to gain an invaluable experience from his time in England. He sees his future possibly with a Sydney club on his return in late September. He looks forward to getting a lot more batting experience with several games being played each week, as being the opening bowler in most games in Australia he hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to play a long innings.
