SOCCER - GLUFC Wallis Lake
WALLIS Lake scored a 2-nil win when they travelled to Tuncurry to play the Tigers at their home field.
The weather was terrible with waves of torrential wind and rain, which translated to untidy football from both sides.
The first half saw Wallis run with the wind, the normal passing game made more difficult with the conditions.
Finally an opportunity was presented to Mitch Yarnold who was able to isolate his opposing defender and then beat him with his natural speed to give Wallis a 1 nil lead at half time.
The second half started as the first with both teams struggling to control the ball.
Blake Clark who had his second start in firsts looked very comfortable at the back, and was able to provide a beautifully weighted pass to Peter Masterantiono who then put his body on the line to head pass the keeper for second goal.
The Tigers mounted good pressure towards the end of the game to show a strong finish but the Wallis defence withstood and finished the game 2-nil victors.
Injury and education commitments have challenged the team’s roster but to coach and teams credit they are working well as a unit.
Points from game: Griff 3, Mitch Wilson 2 and Diesel 1.
Wallis have their last home game before finals this weekend against Camden Haven Redbacks.
Reserves kick off at 1.15pm and firsts at 3pm.
Reserve grade
THE young Wallis Reserves played Tigers, in again very tough conditions.
To the Tigers’ credit they handled the occasion better to have a 2 – 1 win, and showed a little more enthusiasm and experience for the young Wallis team who will hopefully learn from it as they hopefully head into finals.
Points: Chris Cheers 3, Tod Cheers 2 and Josh Walpole 1.
