Crash investigations continue

INVESTIGATIONS into Monday’s double fatal crash on Coomba Road are ongoing with police yet to pin point a cause of the accident.

A ten-year-old girl from Baulkham Hills in Sydney’s west died at the scene and the driver, a 75-year-old woman from Cammeray on Sydney’s North Shore, later died at John Hunter Hospital.

“It’s still early days but in examining the scene there is nothing there to indicate what caused the crash,” Senior Constable Andrew Nelson from the Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Unit said today.

“It doesn’t look like speed was a factor and at this stage it doesn’t look like fatigue was a factor.”

Senior Constable Nelson said that the results of an autopsy carried out yesterday could shed further light on what caused the crash.

“Whether there was some sort of medical issue that contributed, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Senior Constable Nelson also said that early indications were the condition of the road was not a factor in the crash.

“In examining the scene there is certainly no road issue substantial enough that would cause a crash of this type.”

Senior Constable Nelson also said that no independent witnesses had come forward and the 12-year-old girl, who underwent emergency surgery following the accident, was not yet fit to be interviewed.
