One shot at world title

FORSTER triathlete Grant Melzer is eyeing off a world title after recently winning the national age group title (16-19 years).

Melzer was rewarded for consistent performance across three events held in Geelong, Mooloolaba and Sydney.

“You get points across the three races and at the end I came out on top,” Melzer said.

“I got two fourths in Geelong and Mooloolaba so I needed a good finish in Sydney and the second place there got me over the line.”

The races were held over the Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run) to which Melzer says he is suited.

“It suits me well, I’ve got a stronger running background and the (Olympic) distance allows me the time to catch up in the run, so yeah it suits me great.”

The 18-year-old Melzer, who is now based in Canberra, has shifted his focus to the World Age-group Championships in Auckland in October.

“I’ll be in better form come October than I am now. I’ve got some big training ahead but I’ll certainly take some confidence into it knowing I’m the best placed Aussie.”

Melzer will have to perform under pressure with the world title being decided by just one race.

“Yeah, I only get one crack at it, so I’ll be going right out after it and hopefully bring home a world title.”
