Scanes slips into semis

01 Jul, 2009 11:38 AM
OLD Bar’s Oscar Scanes made the semi-finals of the weekend’s Newcastle round of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters series, but was knocked out just shy of the deciding heat at Bar Beach.

There was no shortage of quality in the field; the series reporter described the display from winner Sam Lendrum (Nord’s Wharf) as “a performance that only graces an athlete once in a while”.

In a post-event interview that graces every surfing win, Lendrum said, “I’m really stoked. I finished third here last year, so I wanted to win, but I knew with the calibre of guys competing it would be a tough ask”.

The next event in the series is at Werri Beach on Saturday July 11.
