THE racing hopes of the twin towns have been pinned on a five-year-old Tuncurry gelding who’s out to prove his winning run at the Wingham Cup last year was no fluke.
Trained by Tuncurry’s Terry Evans, Field Dictator, will take on nine competitors from across the state at the racing of the 2100m VB Gold Cup on Saturday.
Even the opposition are getting behind the hopeful that was formerly trained by Gai Waterhouse.
“You’d have to back the local horse,” said rival trainer Stuart Phegan who’ll be racing his filly, Highlight, in the 1400m.
Reservedly confident, Evans who has 10 other horses running at the meet, assures horse racing is the most unpredictable of sports.
“He’s in with a good chance, but there’s no certainty with these things.”
Looking to the field Evans said Dictator’s stiffest competition will come from the likes of So Finer, a Central Coast contender.
Just days out from the Cup Evans and Phegan agree the Tuncurry track is in top shape.
“It’s probably one of the best going round, because of the grass cover of the facility and it’s a big wide open track,” Evans said.
“It’s magnificent - there’s none better, provincially, in the state. Even if it rains it will be good.”
Tickets for the VB Gold Cup are still available at the old lolly shop in Wharf St Forster and opposite the Tuncurry Post Office for $12 (members) and $17 (non-members).
Groups of 20 people can purchase a marquee for $250 or can opt for pavilion seating for $40 per person in addition to ticket price. Chairs, tables and a separate book maker will be on hand at the pavilion, each person receiving two drink tickets. Tickets include free parking or bus admission to and from the event from several locations in Forster and Tuncurry.
