Great Lakes Viking Challenge
THE biggest soccer event in the district has attracted the attention of more than 100 teams for the weekend, among them a Home and Away star [so we’re told].
The Advocate was tipped off that Channel Seven actor Luke Jacobz [otherwise know as Angelo Rosetta in sunny Summer Bay] would be attending the Great Lakes Viking Challenge with his team Custom Gas Australia (CGA).
While organiser Jerrad Allen wasn’t aware he had star power on his side he guaranteed that if Jacobz did play for CGA he would be a show as the team has been cemented to contest Blackhead Bowling Club on the first day of play.
“It’s going to be huge, we’ve got 76 men’s sides and 16 pools,” Allen said.
Last year’s winners, the Dubbo Bulls will be returning to defend their title as they go head to head with Liverarse United first off the bat on the Great Lakes United Field.
Allen tipped punters to lookout for the like of Beached As playing first up on the XS Sport field plus local dark horse Konda Cottage United who will take on In The Brown at 11.30am on the Forster Surf and Sport field.
Golazo FC rounds off the final top four men’s teams tipped to make the finals, they will play the Toongabbie Demons B on the Great Lakes Tourism field at noon on Saturday.
In the women’s teams Allen said the Sydney City Quake have a good chance of claiming a finals birth, their first game will be against Gecko Maintenance on the Saxby’s field at 4.30pm. He said Harbord Moscatos will be another team to watch as they tackle locals the Stroud Supercats at 4pm on the XS Sport field while previous runners up the Y Girls have a chance at claiming their first finals victory, their first game is against Think Pink at 11am on the Great Lakes United Field.
Locals to keep an eye on are the popular Perry’s Girls on Top who play the Stingers at 9am on the Prestige Meats Field.
Allen said the fast paced 30 minute games will ensure the 27 women’s sides and 76 men’s will be on high rotation all day with plenty of opportunity for spectators to peruse or seek out their favourite team.
The first games for the challenge will kick off at 9am from Forster’s Boronia Park.
