Conditions not so wild for regatta

07 Oct, 2009 10:01 AM
WITH the rain came some welcome wind for 60 boats competing in the Great Lakes Sailing Club’s annual Wildcat Regatta at the weekend.

Conditions on Wallis Lake were less than idyllic however competitors from as far as Fiji and Melbourne plus a couple of Olympic medallists, world and national champions made the most of the three day event.

“It was a high quality field,” Great Lakes Sailing Club secretary Scott Machon said.

Luckily for competitors there was enough wind to stage five races with varied degrees of success.

“We had a few capsizes which were very spectacular.”

A new addition to the annual event aspiring sailors got a taste competition in the Openbic, the latest in junior boats.

“The Openbic was a great success we had prizes for the kids and there was some great enthusiasm shown.”

Organisers thanked this year’s Wildcat sponsors Zhik sportswear, Hobie Sports and JR Richards and Sons.
