RAIN did not stop Forster’s 15th Major/Minor Pairs being played last week, the committee varying the conditions of play to accommodate the loss of the first day.
Ninety-six bowlers from near and far started play on Tuesday in intermittent drizzle, competing for spots in the quarters.
Five sectional rounds were completed by Wednesday lunchtime, complete with some upset results. Playing for a semi final spot were (skippers only) Peter Barrett (Pacific Palms) against Geoff Ball (Port City), George McCartney against George Webster both of Tuncurry, Martin Gosper (composite) played John Beach (Tuncurry) and Steve Boyce (composite) played Blake Butler (Terrigal).
After 21 ends, one local, two composite and one visiting team made it through to the semis. Brodie Jobson and Martin Gosper won after being in control throughout their game; Wayne Bolton and Steve Boyce won their game on the last end against the Terrigal boys; Bob Counsell and Geoff Ball proved too strong for Peter Barrett and Mike Cutting and George McCartney won their game comfortably.
In the semis, Boyce played Ball and Gosper was up against McCartney. Tight encounters were the order of the day, keeping a good spectator crowd interested to the last end.
Gosper won their game on an extra end, after the scores were level after 21 ends, with very good bowls being played by the four players. In the other semi, there was only the odd shot separating the two teams for most of the game, with Ball playing many conversion shots in keeping Boyce at bay and eventually ran out the winner.
The final was played in very good conditions, a direct contrast to the previous days, with each team having the ascendancy at different times. This resulted in a tight match, with all players displaying excellent skills and the skips having to make many conversion shots to stay in the game.
However, it only takes one end and Jobson and Gosper obtained a major score late in the game, which enabled them to go into the last end with a four shot buffer. Spectators then witnessed what were probably the best three bowls of the final, from Jobson, Ball and Gosper.
When the dust settled, Brodie Jobson of Telarah and Martin Gosper of Tuncurry won the Pairs Classic from Bob Counsell and Geoff Ball from Port City.
Congratulations are extended to Jobson and Gosper on their hard fought victory and also to Counsell and Ball for their skilful display, both teams providing a great spectacle for the large crowd of spectators.
In closing, Forster Bowling Club thanks all bowlers who participated in this year’s Classic and the spectators who came along to watch the entertaining games. They look forward to seeing all again next year at the 16th running of the event.
