FIREFIGHTERS believe an arsonist has been busy in the Tuncurry area recently.
Up to four separate fires have been lit in the reserve behind the Twin Dolphins Holiday Park in South St.
The first came on Friday January 22 as one unit from Forster’s NSW Fire Brigade was already deployed at a stand off in Wharf St where a man was threatening to set his block of units alight with several drums of petrol.
Local firefighter Doug McDonald was on duty at the time and was extremely frustrated by the situation.
“It was a classic example of resources being called to do nuisance type jobs that are avoidable and if the wind goes the wrong direction you can lose property.”
The fire did pick up and crowned in the top of the trees behind the holiday park but fortunately there was no property damage.
With resources already deployed at the stand off in Wharf St the Rural Fire Brigade was called for back up with the Diamond Beach and Nabiac brigades responding. About two hectares were burnt in the blaze.
Again on Thursday last week two separate fires were lit in the same vicinity – at 12.30pm and then again at around 2.30pm.
Investigations are continuing into the blazes.
