Still waiting for fish results

03 Mar, 2010 08:29 AM
MORE than one month after they were taken concerned Smiths Lake residents are still awaiting the results of tests carried out on underweight fish by the Great Lakes Marine Park.

A spokesperson for the Department of Industry and Investment, which is in charge of the analysis, told the Advocate last week that further testing is required on the specimen and it is unknown when the results will be available.

Tests were carried out in early February after Smiths Lake residents reported mullet, flathead and whiting were washing up on the shoreline severely underweight since Christmas.

The Cheers and Bramble family, who’ve fished in the lake for 140 years, have documentary evidence of the lake’s condition leading back to 1932 and say they’ve never seen an incident as severe.

This is nothing but a ploy by commercial fishers to get the lake opened to the sea so that more larger fish can make their way into the lake where its current fish stocks have been decimated by repeated trawling for fish and prawns. Ban commercial fishing in Smiths Lake and you may get more holiday makers who want to catch a decent fish or two.
