Far from a Barry Crocker shocker

18 Nov, 2009 08:24 AM
EVER had a Barry Crocker and decided to do the Harold Holt but couldn’t find your Al Capone so had to have a Captain Cook and found your Reg Grundies instead?

If you deciphered this unmistakable string of Australian Cockney slang, than you’ve got no Dalai Lamas.

Australian icons have been a part of rhyming slang since the first fleet docked but there is one figure, still living, that keeps popping up in our vernacular and he considers it an honour.

Affectionately referred to as the shocker, Barry Crocker has no qualms over being in several new dictionaries and encyclopedias.

“I think it’s wonderful, my great grandchildren will be able to look me up in the encyclopedia and say ‘there’s that old bugger’.”

Spending an afternoon at Forster library last week Barry put on a show as a favour to the Friends Of Great Lakes Library Service (FOGLLS).

Barry’s friend and colleague, Rob Guittman, who is coincidently the son of a FOGLLS member orchestrated the event.

“When I asked him to come up here he didn’t hesitate, and that’s the kind of guy he is.”

“Barry is an icon, his longevity in the entertainment industry is surpassed only by one or two.”

Barry was awarded an Order of Australia in 1987 for services to the Australian entertainment industry and to charity.

He has hosted his own television show, won four gold Logies and toured the world.

But perhaps his most recognisable contribution to Australian television, for generation Ys at least, is his composition of the Neighbours theme song.

Barry will star in The Legend of Enyo, a children’s animation, expected to air on the Seven Network next year.
