1km for every bowel cancer death

1km for every bowel cancer death

18 Nov, 2009 09:24 AM
FROM Boomerang Beach to Shellharbour is 320km by ocean kayak.

320 is also the number of people that die each month in Australia from bowel cancer so it seemed like the best route for a charity paddle.

Paddle 320 will raise funds and awareness for bowel cancer which is on the increase, particularly amongst younger people but can be cured if detected early.

Taking on the journey are Channel 7’s Sydney Weekender presenter Peter Wells and good mate Doug Lucas, president of Long Reef SLSC in Sydney.

In keeping with the numeric theme the pair has set a target of $32,000 with funds going to Bowel Cancer Australia.

Both Peter and Doug have active, adventurous backgrounds.

Peter has travelled across the Sahara by camel, climbed Africa’s Mt Kiliminjaro and filmed the active volcano Krakatoa, east of Java. Recently he competed in the iconic Coolangatta Gold Ironman coming eighth in his age category

As well as fundraising for research into bowel cancer the 37-year-old is using the 320km paddle as training for the biggest challenge of his life - an attempt on Mt Everest.

He will undertake the climb with close friend Steve Brock whose father died of bowel cancer last year.

Doug is also no stranger to adventure and has competed strongly in two Coolangatta Gold Ironman events as well as being a regular ocean ski competitor at races around Australia. In 2004 Doug was named as the Australian Surf Lifesaver of the Year. He is cautiously optimistic about completing the 320km paddle.

“Fingers crossed the weather is kind and we get north-east conditions and no southerly conditions which will smash us.

“I guess we both just want to do something different for the community whilst going on what will be a great adventure as well as a physical and mental test.”

The pair will leave Boomerang Beach on Saturday November 28.

The public can make donations and get regular updates on the epic journey at www.paddle320.com.
